Welcome to the Regional Flagship Language Initiatives at UW-Madison

For the 2026 cycle, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will offer only the SEAFLI (Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative) program. This program will bring students to UW-Madison this summer for intensive language study of Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese at the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes. Students will then continue their studies overseas in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam during the fall semester. Beginner language students typically meet the ILR 1+/2 level of proficiency (Intermediate High to Advanced Low) by the end of their program. This program is a special initiative of the Boren Awards for international study and will be hosted by UW-Madison until 2027.

Students who are interested in applying for Hindi, Turkish, or Urdu are still encouraged to apply as independents at Boren Awards. For students who are Fellowship applicants, Boren encourages them to look at the domestic programs offered for these languages as well should they be interested.
